failure to launch [01/27/2008 06:45:22]
It's a quarter to seven in the morning as I sit down to type this. Still dark outside. My alarm clock won't be going off for another hour. I haven't been to sleep yet. I'm not going to go to sleep yet. Not for another fourteen hours or so. Circadian resync.
A month ago, I was getting my car packed up for the trip back to Atlanta. My brother was napping on the floor at my parent's house. We all woke up early for the trip: I was the only one headed for Atlanta, but Mom and Dad and Steve were caravaning the first five hours to Shreveport, so we could visit my grandma in the nursing home. I hadn't seen her in maybe 12 years. She's a lot nicer these days.
It was a nice end to a nice holiday vacation, but I was really itching to get home. I was thinking back to September and October, when I was tracking my personal test cases and everything just seemed to be going so smoothly. I was chomping at the bit to get back on a schedule and filling in that checklist.
And that was a month ago.
I haven't completely wasted the past few weeks. I went through a job search, landed a nice contract, and learned all about Drupal... And Scala... And I have spent maybe 20 hours or so this month working on an application that may turn into a product pretty soon. And part of the reason I feel especially out of control right now is that I've had the flu all week and the nyquil didn't help me sleep any better.
But also I haven't been managing my time very well.
So... Time for some new test cases. Last time around, I never actually had a green day. This time I'm going to start small.
Test Cases for Tomorrow:
- I woke up at or before 8AM.
- I exercised for at least half an hour yesterday.
- My desk is clean and clutter free.
- My apartment is clean.
- I am caught up on client work.
- I practiced spanish for at least 20 minutes yesterday.
- I practiced piano for at least 20 minutes yesterday.
- I worked for at least 2 hours on my email backlog yesterday.
Well, that's eight, and they're all very doable for tomorrow. I'm going to paste that list into a spreadsheet, and then take my bike out for a spin. If I can stay focused long enough, I might just have time left over for a little Harvey Birdman on the Wii before I'm too tired to see straight. :)
